See your screens through blue light glasses

Have you ever had trouble sleeping after a night spent looking at your phone, your computer, your television and your tablet? This could be due to exposure to blue light.

What's blue light?

It’s a high energy, short wavelength light that’s emitted by the sun during the day – and by smart phones, tablets, computers, televisions and even fluorescent or LED lights.

While there are all kinds of short wavelength lights, blue light is the strongest. It hits our retinas all the way at the back of our eyes to tell the body it’s daytime – and that we should be wide awake. Which is fine when the day’s getting started, but not so much when it’s time for bed.

Blue light glasses can help

They have a filter which blocks or absorbs blue light. This is especially helpful in the evening, when it’s important to reduce your exposure to blue light so your body can produce enough melatonin to give you a good night’s sleep.

Besides this, blue light glasses can also help reduce eye strain for those of us who spend a lot of time in front of a computer or on their devices.

Should I wear blue light glasses?

If you find yourself looking at your devices within 2-3 hours before you head to bed, it's a good idea to wear blue light glasses.

It’s worth remembering that blue light glasses aren’t designed to be worn all the time, though – as getting your dose of natural blue light from the sun is totally normal. But if you think your screen time might be impacting your sleep time, these glasses could be more helpful than counting sheep.
